Jessica Galati Assignment 1: Art Criticism October 8, 2013 Part One: "Where Modernity Frames Tradition" by Michael Zimmerman Jan. 9, 2013 NYT London is starting to become what one critic calls "Skyscrapers Gone Wild". Recently in London many new skyscrapers have been built and commissioned and they are not being received warmly. Their design follows a "rat race of extravagance" that has captivated most architects. They are being called "supersized, contorted, totally out of context" by the late critic Ada Louise Huxtable. This trend is something that the city of London had tried to stay uninfected, however without success. Kimmelman goes on to critique many of the newest buildings in London and their nicknames. We have buildings such as the gurken, the cheese grater, the can of ham, the walkie-talkie, and the shard, which has actually been getting reviews of being a widely successful design. The new Rothschild headquarters is no skyscraper, reaching 15 stories; however it is being remarked as more distinguished then say the walkie talkie in terms of design. The biggest idea was cutting a passage thought the site and raising the building to allow a view of the St. Stephens tower. The building is designed smooth and sleek, from the hand-carved oak cabinets on the interior and the lofted lobby. I agree strongly with the author's view of the modern monstrosity that is present day architecture. As a commuter to New York City I pass by multiple skyscrapers every day. I think every day that soon we'll have a skyline of incredibly gaudy spikes, curves, and corkscrews. Even the every day buildings are going to the extremes. For example Frank Ghery's 100 million dollar west side IAC building. This building consists of top and bottom frosted glass, walls twisting at odd angles, and a smaller scale of the bottom placed on top. This atrocious building has been described as "oddly tame". I am left speechless by this assessment. As a student of architecture I have designed some pretty zany buildings myself, not that I would ever commission even a single one of them because they would all be eyesores. Part Two: Avery Coonly Playhouse: Triptych Window, 1912 by Frank Lloyd Wright This work by Frank Lloyd Wright was taken from the Avery Coonly Playhouse. This style follows Wright's love for "festive Americana" however it does have Japanese influence which was a large factor in much of Wrights work at this time period. During this time however most of the country, was designing in a prairie style, including the house this window was taken from. The window's geometric shapes and clean lines represent a whimsical and childish simplicity of the children who inhabited the playhouse it was placed in. representation of a party, with balloons, flags, and confetti. It was designed for a playhouse for children and Wright had not meant it to be taken out of its context because it would not be viewed the same. Wrights idea that that glass and the architecture were compliments of each other and that neither could stand on their own. He believed in the context of the building and the window was designed for the day-to-day living of the space he created it for, and no where else. Part Three: Being that Michael Kimmelman had much to say about architecture, I believe he would agree with my analysis of this window. I believe he would asses Wrights earlier works, their context, his ideas about architecture and design, and apply them to this piece. For example, the Light Screen by Frank Lloyd Wright was another piece of art he created in glass for a particular house, the Darwin D Martin house in Buffalo, New York. H again used an abstract mostly linear pattern however using a lush and iridescent color screen considering the inhabitants of this building. As opposed to the playhouse for children and its window, this buildings inhabitants are adults and so the pattern is not as whimsical. Again the window is not meant to be taken out of context like in the Triptych window.

It was soul-crushing to teach, though perhaps a necessity when it comes to teaching high school students how to write effectively. Thats why I found The Writers Diet, a new tool that objectively assesses the leanness of a writing sample, so interesting. Could it be a helpful tool for students? A measure of eloquence? To find out, I gave it a whirl with one of the best opening paragraphs in the history of the English novel. Oh my dickens! Look at that lovely paragraph splattered with ugly neon highlighter. Whats even more injurious to the eyes? The Writers Diet tests fitness rating, which breaks down on a smug little bar graph the faults of A Tale of Two Cities. Alright, so I get it that this test is a totally algorithm-based assessment, and that I chose one of the most flowery writing samples in existence to try it out. But to say that Dickens is beyond flabby is frankly insulting. The only way the WD test could redeem itself now was by casting its harsh neon criticism across the greatest assault to English literature I know of Fifty Shades of Grey. So yeah, turns out that the passage about the girl feeling adventurous because she borrowed her boyfriends toothbrush is officially Fit trim. Nice one, Writers Diet. As it turns out, there is no objective assessment for good writing, because no algorithm can calculate style. And what I didnt mention before is that style is the one factor of the SAT/ACT grading rubric  that separates a mediocre essay from a great one. Its one thing to be able to simply state a message, and another to instill it in your reader. So before you forsake all commas, dependent clauses, adjectives and adverbs, take some time to become a master of the English language. Scratch thatbecome an apprentice of the English language. Even a small infusion of style will take you further than you think. After all, would you rather chomp into a low-fat, gluten free cracker or a dripping, succulent guacamole bacon burger? In response to the 'Black experience' Huey Newton and Bobby Seale founded a group called the Black Panthers. The Black Panthers adopted a socialist agenda that included establishing community based programs that focused on Blacks helping Blacks. Membership in the Black Panthers was limited to African-Americans and purposely did not allow Whites or Hispanics entry to their group. The reason for not allowing membership to Whites was based on the premise that Whites changed how African-Americans behave and act. Their presence was considered a hindrance because the atmosphere, and what Blacks spoke about at meetings, was altered by their mere presence. The Black Panthers argued that if Whites were allowed membership society would assume that the Blacks can't do it alone and the group would fall prey to old stereotypes such as 'Blacks are dumb' and 'Blacks are not able to effectively run and organization without the help of the Wh ites. Also, Blacks argued that Whites do not understand the Black experience so therefore could not relate to the problems faced by Blacks. The Black Panthers focused on the struggle for "ethnic minority and working class emancipation." (USA History Archives). The Bl The Black Panthers were considered a threat to the U.S. Government and were monitored closely by the FBI. But, this did not hinder the party's attempts at social reform. The Blacks were successful in showing that they alone could run and organization successfully and create social programs that met the needs of the Black population. The Black Panthers were responsible for the creation of a feeding program that served breakfast every morning before school to 10,000 Black children across the United States. The Black Panthers also created a medical outreach program in California that conducted health screenings for sickle cell anemia and other diseases that disproportionally affect Black Americans. If we fast forwarded and placed the Black Panthers in the California of today we might find that they would not be tolerated because of the recent history of terrorism. Much of what the Black Panthers did in the 1960's and 1970's would be classified as terrorism today. Their desire for a socialist reform of American society would be misinterpreted as terrorism rather than self-determination. 2. The American Indian Experience. In California history American Indians have a similar experience of discrimination and domination by their White counterparts. Indigenous populations in California have a history that is wrought with domination by outside forces - specifically by Spaniards and the French. Early California history consists of the Spaniards military domination and subjugation of the indigenous population. Although stories of Spanish missions include taking care of the Indians and converting them to Christianity, what's not included is the incarceration type environment that the Indians were held in. Due to him having a close electoral victory he was hesitant to help blacks as he would become less popular amongst the whites, although he had a lot of power to do so anyway. Civil Rights legislation simply was not part of Kennedys agenda, he did use the power of the executive to back up Brown v. Board of education, but he supported no legislation to enforce or extend Civil Rights. However Kennedy had been so shocked by the number of blacks employed that he put pressure on the civil service to employ blacks. Even Kennedy himself promoted 40 blacks to top positions within the White House. However down south the situation was harder to change and Kennedy had to balance morality and practicality as he didn’t want to lose white southern voters. He’d been most helpful with his symbolic gestures by inviting more blacks than any other previous President. His group the EEOC also didn’t have much impact amongst the blacks but left a lasting impact by reminding employers of their obligations. In President Kennedys last attempts of the Civil Rights Bill to help black workers and blacks to use their vote; however the bill got stuck in congress. Johnson did not deviate from the Kennedy agenda significantly while serving the remainder of Kennedys term, but after getting elected in his own right vigorously pursued Civil Rights legislation, and got most of his Civil Rights legislation enacted into law before the new Congress had gotten their chairs warm. It only passed congress once President Johnson who came into power after Kennedy’s assassination continued to try and push the bill through although told it would affect the 1964 presidential election; Johnson insisted that discrimination was wrong. He’d had a vision of the ‘Great Society’, with an end to poverty and racial injustice. In conclusion Kennedy could be seen as someone who calculated his approach to racial problems, only helping blacks when forced to do so. The Civil Rights Bill which had been handed to congress by Kennedy was an important step to the civil Rights movement and although it was passed during Johnsons power it’s unsure if it was due to the sadness over Kennedys assassination, because of Kennedys efforts with the congressmen, or because of President Johnson.

Reaction to the Movie, Camille Claudell This is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. She wasted her life, for a man. Camille was a great sculptor. In her family, she always had the support of her father. She helped her brother with his poems because he liked to write, but that was not very well seen. As well Camille passion for sculpture was not well seen at all, her own mother despite her for what she did. However, she was very strong and always kept going. Everything in her life was going mostly ok until she met Robin, a very prestigious and recognized sculptor. He recognized her talent, so he took her as a pupil. They felt in love and had a passionate affair, but he was married. She became pregnant and since Robin had no intention to marry her, she had an abortion. After this she left Robin for good. She started working on her own works, but she became obsessed with Robin. It seems to her that everything that happened to her was a complot he had against her because he was afraid of her talent. I think that was not true. She produced a huge amount of work, and she got the chance to expose. By this time, her brother had become, thanks to her help, a world famous poet. In the opening of her exposition, she appeared dress very eccentrically. She scandalized everyone in the exhibition, and made her brother ashamed and ran off the room. She got good reviews, but her brother walking out on her, and not selling any of her pieces really disappointed her. So, when she got home, she destroyed, and then buried all of her pieces. Years after that, her father died and her mother and brother decided she was insane, so they secluded her in a Metal Institution where she stayed until her death. Camille Claudell, I think, was one of the best sculptors in the world. She was a genius, and this was mention a couple of times in the movie. It is too bad that she felt desperately in love with Robin, and she wasted all her life and talent loving him. She became delusional; she though everything was a complot against her prepared by Robin.

Deep infrastructure changes are needed, and once you have achieved a certain amount of size, the sheer inertia of the installed base may make it impossible to apply fixes. The challenges for the security industry are growing. With the electronic commerce spreading over the Internet, there are issues such as nonrepudiation to be solved. Financial institutions will have both technical concerns, such as the security of a credit card number or banking information, and legal concerns for holding individuals responsible for their actions such as their purchases or sales over the Internet. Issuance and management of encryption keys for millions of users will pose a new type of challenge. When business and profit are at stake, we cannot assume anything less than the most dedicated and resourceful attackers typing their utmost to steal, cheat, and perform malice against users of the Web. When people use their computers to surf the Web, they have many expectations. They expect to find all sorts of interesting information, they expect to have opportunities to shop and they expect to be bombarded with all sorts of ads. Even people who do not use the Web are in jeopardy of being impersonated on the Web. There are simple and advanced methods for ensuring browser security and protecting user privacy. The more simple techniques are user certification schemes, which rely on digital Ids. Netscape Communicator Navigator and Internet Explorer allow users to obtain and use personal certificates. Currently, the only company offering such certificates is Verisign, which offers digital Ids that consist of a certificate of a user’s identity, signed by Verisign. There are four classes of digital Ids, each represents a different level of assurance in the identify, and each comes at an increasingly higher cost. The assurance is determined by the effort that goes into identifying the person requesting the certificate. Class 1 Digital IDs, intended for casual Web browsing, provided users with an unambiguous name and e-mail address within Verisign’s domain. A Class 1 ID provides assurance to the server that the client is using an identity issued by Verisign but little guarantee about the actual person behind the ID. Class 2 Digital IDs require third party confirmation of name, address, and other personal information related to the user, and they are available only to residents of the United States and Canada. The information provided to Verisign is checked against a consumer database maintained by Equifax. To protect against insiders at Verisign issuing bogus digital IDs, a hardware device is used to generate the certificates. Class 3 Digital IDs are not available. The purpose is to bind an individual to an organization. Thus, a user in possession of such an ID could, theoretically, prove that he or she belongs to the organization that employs him or her. The idea behind Digital IDs is that they are entered into the browser and then are automatically sent when users connect to sites requiring personal certificates. Unfortunately, the only practical effect is to make impersonating users on the network only a little bit more difficult. Many Web sites require their users to register a name and a password. When users connect to these sites, their browser pops up an authentication window that asks for these two items. Usually, the browser than sends the name and password to the server that can allow retrieval of the remaining pages at the site. The authentication information can be protected from eavesdropping and replay by using the SSL protocol. As the number of sites requiring simple authentication grows, so does the number of passwords that each user must maintain. In fact, users are often required to have several different passwords for systems in their workplace, for personal accounts, for special accounts relating to payroll and vacation, and so on. It is not uncommon for users to have more than six sites they visit that require passwords. In the early days of networking, firewalls were intended less as security devices than as a means of preventing broken networking software or hardware from crashing wide-area networks. In those days, malformed packets or bogus routes frequently crashed systems and disrupted servers. Desperate network managers installed screening systems to reduce the damage that could happen if a subnet’s routing tables got confused or if a system’s Ethernet card malfunctioned. When companies began connecting to what is now the Internet, firewalls acted as a means of isolating networks to provide security as well as enforce an administrative boundary. The main types of firewalls are proxy and network-layer. The idea of a proxy firewall is simple: Rather than have users log into a gateway host and then access the Internet from there, give them a set of restricted programs running on the gateway host and let them talk to those programs, which act as proxies on behalf of the user. The user never has a account or login on the firewall itself, and he or she can interact only with a tightly controlled restricted environment created by the firewall’s administrator. Many security experts believe that proxy firewall is more secure than other types of firewalls, largely because the first proxy firewalls were able to apply additional control on to the data traversing the proxy. The real reason for proxy firewalls was their ease of implementation, not their security properties. For security, it does not really matter where in the processing of data the security check is made; what’s more important is that it is made at all. Because they do not allow any direct communication between the protected network and outside world, proxy firewall inherently provide network address translation. Whenever an outside site gets a connection from the firewall’s proxy address, it in turn hides and translates the addresses of system behind the firewall. Prior to the invention of firewalls, routers were often pressed into service to provide security and network isolation. Many sites connecting to the Internet in the early days relied on ordinary routers to filter the types of traffic allowed into or out of the network. Routers operate on each packet as a unique event unrelated to previous packets, filtered on IP source, IP destination, IP port number, and a f few other basic data contained in the packet header. "Just don't do it", the slogan from Bob Dole's anti-drug campaign upon a cursory evaluation, may appear to have been an inefficient way of confronting the growing problem of national drug abuse. After all, it is hardly reasonable to believe that a potential drug user will specifically consider these words before deciding whether to get high or not. However, this slogan, and the man that stands behind it, represents a sorely needed, value-oriented stance on the issue that was lacking in the Clinton administration. The president's cavalier attitude was responsible for a dramatic increase in drug abuse among teenagers. While Clinton's baby boomer generation dismissed aggressive anti-drug campaigns as ineffectual, the truth is that tough approaches to the problem have proven to be very successful. The Nixon, Reagan and Bush Sr. administrations are direct examples of this. When Richard Nixon began his first term, use of marijuana and heroin had reached an all-time high. In response, he vowed to wage a national attack on narcotics abuse, which involved reducing the flow of drugs into the country while stepping up drug treatment programs. Nixon began his work by arranging for the extradition of noted heroin chemists, and sent ambassadors to negotiate narcotics agreements with foreign countries. Turkey, which provided about 80 percent of the U.S. heroin supply promised a complete cessation of its production in exchange for $35.7 million in aid. On the national level, the Nixon administration further proved its dedication to the cause by legalizing the use of drugs to combat addiction and by encouraging anti-drug commercials and television programs. Although many were doubtful that these measures would have any impact, they did help dramatically curtail drug abuse. In 1975, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced that while the purity of heroin had declined, the street price was four times greater. The result was a marked decline in heroin abuse. Unfortunately, the Carter administration failed to continue the vigorous anti-drug campaign. In fact, President Carter at one time advocated that marijuana possession be legalized. It is little wonder that, in the absence of strong moral leadership, by 1979 half of all teenagers were experimenting with the drug. Fortunately, Reagan was elected at this crucial time, and was succeeded by George Bush Sr.. Both presidents strongly supported drug interdiction. Between the years of 1979 and 1992, teenage drug abuse reduced by one-half.

Explain the limitations of market research in terms of helping the development of a marketing plan for either McDonalds or Tesco (M2) Tesco uses primary type of research to gather information about its customers, competitors and the environment. Tesco collects information that has not been collected before and uses both internal and external primary research methods. Internal research includes: Tesco’s customer data whereas external research would include: questionnaires and surveys, experimental introduction of a new product, interviews and focus groups. Tesco is likely to use secondary research data to help determine what type of primary data is required to be precise and not to waste time and money on gathering data that has already been gathered before. Other types if methods used by Tesco are qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research is used when wanting to find out more about customer’s needs, personal experiences and background by asking open qu estions such as; asking what products they buy most often at Tesco and what their preferences. Tesco also uses quantitative research which includes Tesco’s sales, percentage of customers choosing the same answer in a quantitative questionnaire and can later be analysed. Market research is very beneficial for a business such as Tesco, however it can sometimes be a difficult process as there are a few limitations that affect Tesco’s marketing plans. Every marketing research has the potential to be wrong therefore Tesco should plan its research techniques are very expensive and are not affordable to certain businesses therefore Tesco has to make sure that the cost of the research matches it quality. Another limitation of marketing research is reliability, which shows how reliable the information collected is and whether the information would be the same if collected from a different group of people. Tesco should target the most suitable groups of people to question in order for the information to be effective and beneficial for the organisations marketing plans, such as; to improve customer service at Tesco has to make sure that the information gathered is accurate as people might answer randomly out of laziness and the end result would end up being inaccurate, causing Tesco to carry out another research, costing them both time and money. Tesco collects its customer’s information for organisational purposes, however there is an act that protects the use of customer’s personal information by the business; Data Protection Act 1998 which controls how personal information is used by organisations. Tesco needs to ensure that the information on this data is: †¢Kept up to date and not kept longer than necessary †¢Not transferred to any other country without adequate protection †¢Processed in accordance with the ‘’data subjects’ (the individuals) rights This act is very beneficial for the customers whereas Tesco will be sued under this act in an event of loss of information or in case where customer’s information is accessed by inappropriate individuals or organisations. This would have a great impact on Tesco as it holds information of millions of customers and the amount of money Tesco would have to pay each customer would be a very large amount, leaving Tesco in loss and affecting its Marketing Plans such as: expansion. Tesco wouldn’t be able to hold customer interviews as they have customers in a lot of countries in Europe. This would take up a lot of their time as they wouldn’t be able to get the opinions of all their customers. Although Tesco aim to provide an excellent customer service, they cannot achieve this by using this type of research. Surveys could be a bad idea too as they can be costly to create a questionnaire, but once set up can used for a large sample. It could also lead to Tesco not actually getting their surveys back from customers. It takes time to create a survey/questionnaire which is then is slower when trying to get as many back as you possibly can. Lastly focus groups wouldn’t be of any use for Tesco as they do not need people to taste anything or try certain objects. Setting up a focus group can be very expensive and needs to take place in a specific location. Often a focus group is observed through a one-way mirror, which would take up a lot of Tesco’s time trying to find a location that has these things. The information gathered for market research is very useful and reduces the chances of the business making the wrong decision. Before coming up with a marketing play Tesco must always conduct research in order to have an ideas of whether the plan is an appropriate thing for the compa ny.

The film had more compassion for victor as he was getting chased by this gigantic frightening monster At the beginning of the story the creature is seen as a monster but when the monster tells his story to Frankenstein he seems the victim. As the story goes on the sympathy for Frankenstein increases the reader then realises that the creature is just getting even with the world for the things the world did to the creature, like rejecting him. The creature’s story makes the reader realise that he isn’t a monster just a neglected baby who grows up full of hatred because of oppression and mistreatment. The novel’s genre is a romance, horror, thriller, science fiction, and action. This might be the reason why it is so popular. It is a romantic novel because of the fact that the creature desires love and because of Frankenstein’s love for his family. It is a horror novel from Frankenstein’s point of view because the creature seems like a monster that is intent on killing and hurting people. It is also a thriller novel because it leaves you in suspense about the murder of the young boy, William, and also a science fiction story for the cloning and bringing to life of a human being. It is an action novel as well because of the fighting and chasing. When the book was first published, it was not popular at all since it was considered a dark and devilish novel. Readers were extremely superstitious at the time. It became more popular as people became less superstitious and understood the subtext of promoting parenting skills. Mary Shelley’s original name was a Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, and on the 30th of August Mary Shelley’s mother died giving birth to her. Her mother and father were also Famous in the publishing world. When she was 17, she eloped to France with her lover. Her lover was the infamous Percy Shelley; Mary was pregnant with his baby. After that, her father did not talk to her for 2 years. Mary Shelley gave birth to her daughter Clara two weeks premature. Clara died a couple of weeks later. She had nightmares about her baby’s death, that and her father not talking to her, probably inspired her to write such a dark novel. The reader sympathises with the monster because he is not supported or loved (as Shelley felt unsupported). Frankenstein’s role in the novel changes it goes from victim to villain. At first victor is being chased by the monster that he created because victor neglected and abuse the creature turning it into a monster but later on, the reader realises that Frankenstein rejects the creature just because of what he looks like. The creature just wants to ask him to make another being like him so he will have some one to loves who loved him, back. Frankenstein seems to the reader to be the villain. Although he doesn’t actually commit murder, victor Frankenstein indirectly causes the problems. If he had considered the implications of creating another being. Many of the tragedies in the text would have been avoided. Frankenstein thinks he is the victim of the monster but he really is the victim of knowledge and curiosity. The creature is born an innocent child and all of the hatred that he is subjected to is passed on to him through the way he was treated by others. Even when he saved a girl from drowning her lover shots at him like he is the one who is threatening her life. The creature turns all of his hatred and swears to get even with the world. He turns his back on humanity. The creature is not born evil he simply turns evil to get vengeance. This links in to Shelley’s reading of Jean Jacques Rousseau and the ideas such as nature versus nurture. The creature becomes evil from his observation of the human race, he desperately wants to experience companionship and to be loved instead of being driven away and treated as a monster. His naivety gradually changes to cunning and hatred through his encounters and once he has murdered, the overwhelming sense of power feeds and nourishes him. Frankenstein is not portrayed as evil in the same way, his experiments are sinister and he is cowardly when the final result is too hideous for him to acknowledge. Frankenstein did not intend to create an evil creature many of its qualities were very fine, from intelligence to sensitivity and . a capacity for intense love. When Frankenstein was a young boy he described his own character saying ‘My temper was sometimes violent, and my passions vehementi which suggests to the reader that they were very similar. Unfortunately the hideous body never allowed any human to experience the other side of its character. All in all they both were just as evil in their own way and both ended up unhappy. The creature was not a great deal different they were both smart and craved knowledge. If Frankenstein was treated as bad as the creature was then he would have certainly turned his back on all of humanity. The creature’s life would have been very different if he had a father who did not abandon him and loved him, because the creature would have someone to lean on. I feel more sympathy for the creature than for victor Frankenstein mainly due to the fact that the creature wasn’t even given the right to live or be loved. The creature was put through many ordeals and was hated by all that see/ meet him with an exception of one, the blind man. The blind man didn’t reject the creature because he couldn’t see his abnormal body. I hardly felt any empathy toward victor since he abandoned his son the person he gave life to then not allow him to live. I believe that I feel sorry for the monster more because I could imagine the difficulty of not having any parents to bring me up.
